Il Pianto d’Orfeo

This program marks a return to the beginnings of opera. The more famous music of Monteverdi was influenced by the pioneering works of Peri and Caccini, and is here presented alongside the music of Monteverdi's successors Rossi and Sartorio. This programme spans the story of the demi-god, ready to bring his beloved Eurydice back to life, at any cost. Like Orpheus, Nicolas Achten accompanies his own voice, with Deborah York performing Eurydice. They are accompanied by a plethora of enchanting instruments, such as cornets, theorbos, the harp, viola da gamba and organ, merging with the magical colours of the lirone and ceterone.
